Serial Supermarket Shenanigans [Part 6]
A little less crazy-shopper set, more telling of what fellow store workers have done.
One day, what seemed to be a perfectly regular if busy day, a very drunk man, not any of the usuals, came into the Self Check Out and went up to Cashier S and started making demands. Cashier S hates drunks and wanted him away, especially as he was being rude and attempting to start a fight with her - over what, nobody could tell, maybe the prices on his poison of choice offended him. Cashier S just sighs and tells him to go fight the Security Guard.
He actually went to fight the security guard.
Security Guard J, the Main Security Guard and The Usual Guard of Our Store, told Drunk Man to calm down firstly, there are children present that do not need to hear his cursing, which Drunk Man did, surprisingly. Until the kid and her dad walked away, then it started up again. Guess he’s a Letter of the Law when it suits him, kinda guy.
Then Drunk Man started a fight.
I didn't see it how it started, as I was head down mostly and scanning products to get the line through, but I heard a loud 'Ka-shang', as the Drunk Man was pushed into the 'garage door' of the butchers store. He tried to fight Security Guard J and The Buildings Security Guard, who came to help when he saw the escalating fight.
Next thing I see is the man's on the ground and gasping and coughing like he's about to vomit. He still tries to fight back, so they forced him into the wall, flat on the ground and hands behind his back, as the two hold him in place, J calls the police. Drunk Man laid on the ground, moaning and coughing, but not struggling too much.
And then I realize a lot of clients were coughing and there was a smell in the air – it was pepper spray. They had pepper sprayed him, which is why he fell to the ground coughing.
Problem is, we're in a building, without operable windows, so the smell was going around the open zone. Fellow Cashiers in the neighboring registers were right next to the scene, so they had the strongest of the smell. I was furthest, but could still smell it, even with a mask on - yeah, still wearing a mask at this point.
Finally the police got there, got the man and took the report from the Security Guards, before leaving, with the smell of pepper spray still lingering.
They ended up opening the front and personnel entrances to air out the floor, because the stench was spreading.
There was a lady that had previously asked/demanded if Security Guard J had impotence issues because he told her she cannot shop as it was closing time, which caused her to shout at J about Impotence Issues and such. Well, she had returned and was grilling him if he fixed his problem. I am in awe that J did not deck her into the next millennium for that.
Then a guy tried to steal alcohol. Security Guard J was not amused. The man even had audacity to demand coffee – something which made J raise his voice loud enough for the shopping area to hear, "Have you no f*cking shame?! You steal and now you demand coffee?!" Some people truly are without shame or common sense.
A very drunk man – with half of a face that, as polite as I can say, looked like it lost a fight with a lawn mower – tried to steal a can of beer, Security Guard J just lightly pushed him to the ground and asked for the beer. The man just sighed and gave it back. At least he knew when he lost.
Me and a colleague watched as a friendship was breaking up when two ladies tried to buy alcohol: "What do you mean you don't have the money to pay?! I gave you a 50 not too long ago!" "Well, I need more money now!" "HOW THE F*CK DO YOU-" – Was entertaining in a bystander way. I think the other lady paid for her friend and they continued their argument on the way outside of the store. Probably well into the night.
When you hear what sounds like a bunch of bottles rattling and look around, spotting Security Guard J wrestling with a man with a very big bag. Dude tried to smuggle out several hundred euros worth of booze out.
Lady walks into the store 2 to 23:00 and tries asking the Security Guard where is what and decides to stroll through the store. She gets yelled at to either buy something now or leave, because everyone would like get home. She gets huffy, knows over some baskets and leaves. What a witch, maybe buy a clock? The building has a guy who fixes clocks.
Another thief had chosen to put a small bottle of alcohol in one of his pockets. Later, he bends down to check out some vegetables that are in a box on the ground and the bottle falls out of the pocket and shatters. He 'hides' the evidence by throwing the biggest part of the shattered bottle into a small wastebin for broken bags and quickly walks away. Head Cashier S was just staring in surprise and asked the security guard on duty to watch him. It ended how you think it ended.
One night, a Lady was wrapping each product into a separate bag – like if she bought 3 apples, she would put each apple in its own bag. No idea why. It was a lot of bags too, like, a Captain Planet Villain Lot. I didn’t watch Captain Planet, so don’t know if that’s accurate, sorry.
Man Tries To Cause Problems In Store. Security Guard J knocks him down and drags him to the office for the police to collect.
Imagine, as you sit in the register, going through the motions, a man coming up to your lane and, after I tell him the total, he tries to shake my hand (I did not shake his hand), then he says 'he doesn't have to pay' (I tell him he does because that is the law, which prompts him to repeat the same sentence at least 3 times), THEN he calls somebody and tries to give me his phone (I did not take the phone).
The line was growing long and I was the only cashier. And since he wasn't paying, I called the head cashier to annul the whole transaction so I can work. Some people in the line yelled at him to either pay or leave, he just yelled back. Head Cashier S was giving the guy 'are you nuts' side eye as she removed the products.
When the next person in line – a mother and her child in a stroller – tried to move forward, she asked him if he can move. Crazy Guy did the 'go away' hand wave and when she asked him again to move, he threatened to kick the stroller! The man from before yelled at him and Crazy Guy started yelling back. Crazy Guy was then trying to even take the lady's products (one of which, I think, was a diaper package), before several people yelled at him to not take anything. He looked for his products and went to Head Cashier S and started hollering at her – but she's been in the job for a long time so paid no mind to him. I got worried and called the security guard, a younger and newer one we shall denote as Security Guard JJ. Security Guard JJ went to him and started talking calmly.
A bit later, I see the same guy in the lone, with Security Guard JJ on one side and Mobile Security Guard (a very burly man that could fold a person in half) standing on the other side. And when I get through his stuff again, he tried to pay with 1 euro and his house keys…he patted several times all of his pockets, opened the jar of pickle salad and started eating there – which he still haven't paid for.
Well, guess who got dragged away to the office and be collected by the police.
One of the stokers later came to the kitchen when I was on lunch break and said she saw some shaggy guy out cold with cops around him - "probably from drugs", she guessed.
They must've put him in the drunk tank, because I was told he came by the next day, far more sober then the day before, apologizing for his actions and asking if he pays for the jar, can they please not file anything with the police. He did pay, though, so good on him.
Part 6, done! People really are surprising, huh? Part 7 coming soon!
