Serial Supermarket Shenanigans [Part 9]

Alright, time for more oddities!

One day, a man came in, he bought stuff like normal and when I lifted my head to tell him the total, I was eye to eye with his pet crow. An actual crow, it was standing on his arm, moving only enough not to lose balance and yanked on his shirt until got beak scritches. I dunno how a crow is just chill being in a supermarket, but they are intelligent birds. I wonder if the crow could know how to use the Self-Check Out.

Drunk Man was found trying to steal beer. Was caught and delivered to the Security Office. Fell asleep and peed himself in said Security Office. The Security Guard was mad the rest of the day. Grandpa is right, “by that point, they’ve forgotten what shame even feels like“

One lady started calling one of the Head Cashiers 'ginger' – except she was using the version that refers only to ginger cats – in a strange tone. She does not enjoy that, not a bit. Not even sure why, it wasn’t even the right colour.

Granny yells at a Cashier because her receipt did not come out. Oblivious Girl had activated her card upon hearing the cashier request the store card and the receipt went to her. Screaming old woman was not happy about that. Threats of suing – for not giving her a receipt?! – and comments about ones mother being of low class, if you catch my drift. Again, over a receipt!

Maintenance Guys try to fix the problem from which two ceiling tiles are yellow-brown color (my money is on hidden corpse, the building just has the aura that it has hidden bodies, but others bet it's problematic water pipes). The 'repair' ended with needing to move the Weekly 5 Selection stand so it doesn't get wet from the leak.

So, we had a new girl, fresh out of high school, on her first job. I was her teacher, showing her the ropes of the job on her first day. As soon as I gave her the chance to sit and try out when the other Cashier came back form his break (you know, experience on one side that moves lines quickly and not stress out the newbie if the line got too long), a lady started complaining about her day being ruined now that 'some brat is being taught', being a drunk Karen wanting vodka basically. She really started shouting when a teen behind her told her to 'just quiet down and let her work' and then got even louder when her companion tried to quiet her down. The other cashier just yelled at them to either quiet down or get the eff out, I was going for the phone to call security. Drunk Karen quieted until she got her stuff and then proceeded to start screaming at her buddy again and even hitting him. Fun first day on the job, huh?

Management decided to put a stand with products between registers. Care to guess how much stuff people decided they don't want and left it were? A lot. From alcohol bottles to fresh foods to ice cream. Just…leaving it at the stack…Why even request for the workers at the gourmet selection to package the food, if you decide to not buy it?

Drugged Up Guy came in and was screaming. Security Guard was hard at work containing him – others described DUG as 'clearly on enough cocaine that if he breaks out of Guards hold, it will get violent and bloody quickly'. 2 male clients launched at DUG and helped Guard contain him, while a third one was trying to kick DUG's legs from underneath him (I guess he thought it would be easier to hold him if he lost his footing?). Then a Store Floor Worker and Head Cashier both arrived and helped drag DUG to the Security Office until police arrived. I saw the video of it on Guards phone. It was wild. It was a bit funny that the Head Cashier that day, a short woman, was on her tippy toes to hold DUG by the scruff as the big guys dragged him to the back.

Remember the deposit coupons? The ones most stores give money in exchange, but my store doesn't because the buildings owner hated how many drunks would come in to get money? We can at most give change back up to 50 cents? Yeah, we have a real genius in charge of a business here…he came by and asked for a small box of matches – cost 4 cents – and tried to pay me with a 3.90 coupon. I tell him I can only give change back up to 50 cents, but he kept saying that this purchase IS up to 50 cents, so I need to go through with the purchase. I told, Security Guard told him, an old lady behind him told him, the Head Cashier told him – he would not understand the problem.

Came back from a quick break and saw a broken ketchup jar on the floor. Was like, 'yikes aaaaaand the janitor has gone home for the ni-wtf' and turn a corner to see a polipack of kefirs on the floor, partly open and covered in ketchup, looking like a murder scene. How and why, I still don’t know.

Man demands I use all of the points/money on the store card – I couldn't because you can only use the points/money on the card to pay up to 99% of the total. The amount the card had was 83 cents. The total of the purchase was 54 cents. See the issue? But as I was explaining it to him, he shouted "I am leaving this country! I do not want Rinkēvič (the surname of the homosexual president) to get my money!"…because the president of the Republic of Latvia would want cents on a store card…I almost told him that P*tin would like to have your money instead. At least Security Guard came over and ordered the guy to pay or to leave.

Head Cashier was so annoyed at the SCO Register #1 at how much it was glitching and normal rebooting was not doing anything, that she pulled the plug and then put it back in to deal with the issue – except that erased the past 4 hours of information, including returning money, from the memory. On a Monday, with a lot of transactions. She avoided legal trouble, but got a write-up about that, and they managed to fix everything.

Lady Tries To Steal Stuff But Was Caught By Security Guard – she tried to argue that she 'doesn't know what is going on', while Guard just frog marched her to the Office. Somebody fucked up though, because she had been caught by 20:00 and was only collected by the police at 23:00, when it normally takes half an hour to maybe an hour if it's rush hour. Why? The dispatcher forgot to file the report and send it up. So, you can imagine the Security Guard was not happy by that, at all.

On New Years Eve, the store closed at 21:00 instead of 23:00, because everyone wants to go home, y’know. By the time Head Cashier was done and walking home, she saw two people trying to pry the locked front doors open, shouting about needing alcohol…I think by that point it had already been just after 22:00, so they wouldn’t be able to buy it anyway.

And on New Years Morning, the store would open at 10:00, so everyone could get some sleep after the celebration. A man was at the door at 8:00 in the morning, pulling the door and screaming that he needs sausages IMMEDIATELY. What a weirdo, huh…

Part 9 is finished. Part 10 coming up next!
