Decided to draw some more Ricochet! Hey, my fankid, I can draw her as many times as I want! And I've wanted to do some redraws from comic panels, games and shows for a bit. Most have more characters present and I have not come up with ideas for who fills them (so many options for ships, ah the struggles of multishipping), so sticking to just Rico for now.

Did consider a couple more to be added here, but work made me too tired to do more, so, only 3 three pics. Weird thing, I wanted to also record me drawing the outline/base in Paint Net, but OBS didn't let me??? Tried several times, but could not get it to record it, nor the removal of the base linework.

Like, huh???

So, just enjoy the drawing I did in reg Paint!

More Stories from a Retail Worker

Alright, onto Part 2 of this Neverending Saga of Supermarket Stories…

As holidays ended and jobs started up again, the flow of people calmed down - in a sense. Along with restrictions, people would now mostly come in specific times. Like before work started, lunch times and after workday is over. Sure, people would come all day, but mostly a trickle VS a flood. Seriously, you’d think these people were starved for weeks or something.

Though the flow is also dependant on the days of the week. Mondays have Senior Discount Day, so majority of old folks around the area - not all, but most - go shopping then. And they always ask every Monday if the Senior Discounts are still happening. Ma’am, I don’t see why the company would discontinue 10% discounts that brings in a swell of people every Monday, you’re fine.

At least most of them pay nearly exactly instead of dropping huge notes, like others. And it's kinda sad that when one says 'that was the nicest thing anyone has said to me today' when I wish them a nice day.

Weekends are a mixed bag, depends on what happens there or the weather. Mostly slow trickles, could come in swells or just be empty for a bit. Very few ways to tell before opening the store. If Holiday, the days before are packed and the days of tend to be calmer. But if there are events during the day, or even in the evening, you might get some waves then.

As it was Pandemic Era, masks were mandatory. Now, most people did wear masks, be they the medical or made of cloth, types that followed the rules - though a number did not understand that it is supposed to go over the nose too - but some geniuses decided that any mask was allowed.

Ergo, Horse Head and Bruised-Up Man.

Horse Head was a rubber mask of an actual horse head. Dunno how he breathed in that thing, but the security guard did not yeet them out, so gonna guess it was fine. But, how is that better then a piece of cloth at the very least? The store is warm, does he not sweat? At all?

Bruised-Up Man was a rubber mask of a man that got cartoonishly beaten up pretty badly. I still don’t understand what made the shopper chose that mask in particular. Was it how they actually looked? Was it mocking someone? Probably will never know the answer to that.

A lot of small dogs are brought in the store. A lot. Mostly because it was winter and they are so small their owners can just carry them as they shop. But they are so cute. And some are very polite, even got a permission to pet a pupper. And a lot more doggos since then!

But while most of the dogs are very polite and curious…kids are mostly loud. Man, one just screeched for the heck of it - seriously, just head down, following the products as you scan it and suddenly this SCREECH came outta absolute nowhere, startling everyone in the first floor of the building, then you hear a baby laughing, like, little dude! Seriously, what are you doing, kid? Heart attacks are no good!

Then another almost threw a tantrum, because dad had to take his candy bag and gave it to me to scan and pay for it - probably thinking he's not going to get it, I guess. But it was not the kids first time in the store, and doubt it was the first time they bought candy, so why did they freak out like that?

And another started desperately crying, thinking mommy is leaving him...even though she stepped three steps from the store cart where the kid was sitting to pay for the stuff they want. Again, why, little guy???? Does mommy not usually do that????

Kids are nice, especially when older and can hold a conversation, I had a little girl explain to me why lynx’s are the best animal ever. Very fun, interesting to hear what they think and rationalize, given their limited life experience. I feel bad for the kids who wanted something, but restrictions didn't allow us to sell it, like balloons and toy cars. Still ridicules looking back - how do packaged toys transmit a disease?!

But little kids can be explained and dogs are The Best Little Guys Ever, but you know the truly most annoying thing? That people are so forgetful of their stuff! I have had people nearly forgotten their bank cards, their change, their entire purchase that they just paid for. It is so ridicules. Like, one thing, like chewing gum, because it slid in the corner, sure. But something like 20 items, is…incomprehensible to me.

Some come back, nice and all, thankful for keeping the stuff or letting them get it from inside of the store. We register the forgotten bought stuff in a journal, in case people do come back. But man, this one lady. She all but threw a tantrum. She forgot this small bottle of alcohol and accused me of watching her leave and not alerting her on purpose. What purpose? No idea. But, lady, I had a long line! The second one goes to pack is when I stop paying them any attention to focus on the next customer! I literally do not have the energy to watch after every person AND the line at the same time.

And not just stuff they bought, they forget their own stuff! One granny forgot where she put her bag, so she went to look for it, leaving her stuff as the next in line at the register...the next customers just handed me their stuff, so we can move the line, because she was taking too long.

There is a bakery right across from the registers, so many clients rush to get the freshly baked goodies, where most of the air-headed customers go without taking their stuff. Some do quickly leave the building, so harder to give them their purchase.

Speaking of buying stuff, people get really prissy when they expected a discount, but it didn’t appear, which leads to arguing about that, when they ignored the signs that state the condition to get said discount includes the phrases “with store card only“ (which they did not have) or “two or more“ (which they did not follow). I swear to the gods of my ancestors, one of the head cashiers had to bust out a calculator to explain how discounts work to this one old lady. And somebody else would huff and want it off their purchase just because of them not wanting the extra work of getting that discount. It’s so ridicules.

Is it the cashiers fault that they didn't see right? Like, this happened to me once on the other end. I found some flip-flops for one euro thought, neat and bought them and they were like 3 euro. I was confused about it, but I didn't threw a tantrum. I just payed the bill and sucked it up that I didn't see right.

Some people just really go to the store to have a fight. Like, my mentor was talking with the security guard and this random angry lady just went in her face with 'oh, so you're too good to do your job now?!' outta nowhere. Like???? Talking with colleagues is not forbidden, madam???

At least it wasn't in the same week as Calculator Lady.

Yeah, this all sounds rough overall, but there are worse jobs. Plus, I like routine, so it makes it easier.

Alright, Part 2 done, more in Part 3, it is just too hot to write anymore.

Stories from a Retail Worker

Hello! Welcome to a multi-part saga that never ends, because I work in retail and despite the store not having a fast lane, it’s never slow there!

I used to work in the court system, as a secretary, y’know, receiving and sending mail, contacting people, writing down the happenings in the court and making it readable for people later, that kinda stuff. It hadn’t been super busy, there were days I was just sitting in the chair, waiting for anything to come our way, but when it got busy, we stayed past workday end time just to get things done.

But then COVID happened. Work got reduced by a whole lot more. Enough so, one colleague was taking thick books to work just to have something to do. And the fact we had so little to do, a number of secretaries were let go.

And months later, dozens of applications a week, the only place to call back with a human - was a supermarket.

Well, one place did respond, but it was to give me homework just to be selected for a candidate pool. They didn’t even call back when I submitted the work to them. WTAF

So, yeah, supermarket. That was 2020 and I am still there as of writing this. And boy, I thought people in my country were generally smarter than a certain country with Karens abound, but NOPE! I am amazed that I have not seen anyone stick their tongue into a power outlet, thinking that was how they had to pay.

And if you think I am joking, then buckle up! I’ve got over 5 years of certifiably crazy capers causing complications.

My first day on the job was also training day: December 30th. You already see the problem, but let’s continue!

My Mentor and I got the register ready for work, they were showing me how things work behind the system. As I usually shop in the Self-Check-Out, I had some idea how this works, though seeing things like codes that you can write in instead of looking for items was certainly interesting. And soon after, the store was opened and people started coming in.

Y’know when in video games, there are just wave after wave of enemies with little to no break? It was like that. Honestly, despite it being a training day, I barely sat in the register, because the lines grew so long so quickly and my first-day-on-the-job-ass was not fast enough to dissipate them, leading me to mostly stand there during the day and learning where stuff was in the store, while Mentor Flashed her way through the lines.

I swear, it still feels like every single person in the city specifically came to that one store all at the same time, there is no other explanation for it. But I got to go home early (16:15-ish) as newbies do, so at least got to rest my feet.

And on the second day, Mentor had the day off, so I was put together with an experienced cashier to sit back-to-back and help out when I had questions. Most of which were variants of what the heck is this thing? me showing the product with no labels But since the Head Cashier put up an ad sized notice of 'I am training, so I may be bit slow. Thank you for understanding' at the til, so people would be aware that this one might take some time. But the waves were far more manageable.

Mostly due to the limits of baskets and trolleys. If nobody recalls or this was not done in their country, we had rules, enforced by the government, that you could not enter without either a basket or trolley, as it was a way to keep track of numbers inside of the store.

Not that people were not causing problems even that early. I heard and saw so many folks throwing tantrums that they had to wait for baskets or that they had to bring their baskets to the registers to be collected and not just randomly thrown somewhere in the store. The lines were so long, they were going out of the shopping center doors as they waited. It looked ridicules. And many folks bought enough food for a week, ate it all the same day and would come back for seconds.

I recall one lady got chewed out by the Security Guard for dumping her basket in the store and was told to bring it to the registers. She thought she was so smooth and just took a basket from the tower that formed by the registers. Security Guard was Not Amused and told her to find her actual basket. Ever seen a 40-50-year-old woman throw a tantrum and yeet a basket away? Oof.

But recall that humans also fill up the governments and they certainly…had ‘ideas‘ of solving the COVID problem…

The first! They had the brilliant idea of not allowing to sell anything other then food or hygiene products during weekends, then close all stores that aren't all purpose ones (so supermarkets open, but the beauty product shop closed). But then they also decided that the open stores couldn’t sell alcohol and such products during those weekends - I saw a man go to the register with a whole trolley full of alcohol...my liver nearly shrivelled up…

After two weeks, they then changed their minds - now you could buy alcohol, in addition to foodstuff and hygiene products, but you can’t buy clothes, etc… so when two kids wanted to buy glue sticks, I had to explain that new rule prevented me from selling that to them, which we all agreed was stupid.

Then they made a new rule: curfew! When has that ever been the solution?

So, there had been a curfew from 22:00 to 5:00, so nobody could be on the streets - at all. Or get arrested and fined. Some people joked about getting shot after 22:00 - then somebody said the shots were vaccines, which, y’know, is what it is, but considering the 'geniuses' in charge have said 'Every life of our citizens is a tragedy' (yes, they have said that)...I wouldn't put it past them…

Alright, stopping here for now! There is quite a bit more, my first three months were…something. And this feels a good enough spot to take a break.

Till next time! Bye~!

Whisper the Wolf may be the Guardian Angel, but Tails is the Grim Reaper….

The summer fair celebration of Riga's founding

Celebrating the founding of Riga! With a lot of activity, Vermanes Garden was full of excitable youths, enjoying the sights and games set up for them, while Old Riga, the original Riga city that was founded before it expanded in the subsequent centuries, had a more medieval flavour to its attractions.

Separated into two posts, because Vibes - one is more 1920s/retro styled, the other is the proper medieval play, for those who want to see one style.

Original Description: In the downtown Riga famous park: Vermanes Park, in the Summer of 2016, there was a fair (well, the fair was all over Riga, but I digress) with a lot of Retro Themed attractions.
Here, kids of all ages could enjoy the bubbles she made the way they were made back in ye olde days.

The Fair: The Bubble Maker 2

Original Description: Like this nifty rope soaked with soap water, it could make BIG bubbles…well, could and did are two different things. The kids always touched and the bubble always popped before it formed. But man, were they HUGE!

The hat was cool, but it kept sliding slightly. I could seriously feel it slipping down. Good thing I don't have to stand for hours like in the old days!

Walking by Daugava 7

Original Description: This is a small lake connected to Daugava at the end of the original road. If you notice some ruined buildings from really old days…that's what they are.

Mazjumpravas Muiža is quite old, dating back to the 13th century, seeing every single one time that my country has been invaded, taken over and controlled, it was made into a concentration camp during WWII, which left the last two buildings in the deplorable state they are in today. With the construction of the Daugavas Promenade, Rīgas Dome has decided to keep the buildings and make this into a little park for peoples enjoyment.

Added Description: I hadn't even known there had been any of those camps in Latvian territory.
And it wasn't the only one.

Walking by Daugava 8

Original Description: I've been inside of it, for a moment, nothing spectacular, but a sense of long life on the remaining walls.

Original Description: The second building, much bigger then the first. It's insides are full of fallen leaves. I wonder if anyone ever cleans it up…

Walking by Daugava 10

Original Description: The third and final building. This was one of the best shots, honest. It's too wide to even try and get it in from the front, so a side shot had to do. The metal was put atop it to protect the ruins from the elements, somewhat.

Walking by Daugava 18

Original Description: Can you guess what it is?

It's an old hanger. Apparently, there was an old airport nearby, but nowadays it's pretty abandoned. Well, on the plane side of things. There's plenty of farm houses/summer homes nearby and one of the old roads is used for driver tests. But the hangers themselves are left alone.

August usually has the Rīgas Svētki, a celebration of Riga’s birth. And one of the perks is that the Museum of the History of Riga and Navigation opens its doors for free to the people. I went into the courtyard, having only been inside of the actual Doma Cathedral, not the museum part. And there was an art installation that was rather cool!

Ventspils Sunset

Original Description: Going to Ventsipls every summer is a tradition in the family. And even this year had pictures to take. Sorry, but lil' bro this year, he didn't want to climb the anchors and instead went to the Jungle Path (Which is basically a obstacle course hidden near the steam train tracks for kids of all ages to enjoy).

This was taken when we got to the beach after finding lil' bro. It's certainly beautiful, isn't it?

Beneath the Water

Original Description: Unlike Jurmala or Vecaki, Ventpils is located in front of the Baltic Sea and has numerous little rocks at the bottom, while anything within Riga's Gulf is just sand and seaweed. It's certainly a colorful bottom, if ya ask me.

Original Description: Basically: there's a pond, with a bit of an attraction, where you have to pull the little float across the pond by the chain going through the hoops on the edges. Dad decided to do it shirtless and some other kids joined the fray when they saw him going towards it.
